Hoping to educate New Yorkers to the growing opportunities and challenges of doing business in the European Union, the Paris-based European American Chamber of Commerce will form a chapter in Manhattan this year. Heading the effort will be James Rosener, managing partner of the New York office of the law firm Pepper Hamilton. Within the next six weeks, Mr. Rosener will start recruiting members and plans to organize two talks for the spring. The first will be on investment issues resulting from the exploding strength of the Euro and the second will focus on new challenges related to the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act.“A substantial amount of business between Europe and America flows through New York,” says Mr. Rosener, who will serve as president of the chamber’s New York chapter and also sits on its Paris board. “Setting up an office here was an obvious choice.” The chamber will deal with the increasing number of business issues spurred by the development of the European Union, particularly those that transcend the borders of any one country. For example, there has been an increasing flow of goods and services between the East and West due to the lower labor costs of former Soviet bloc countries. The two-year-old Chamber hopes to attract major political leaders to events due to its pan-Europe focus.Nonetheless, another immediate goal for Mr. Rosener is to forge partnerships with as many one-country Chambers as possible. “We want to invent their members to our events and hope they’ll do the same,” he says.
