Signing Off

Before leaving on vacation, I take this opportunity to sign off from the Weekly Message and to thank you for following with me the extraordinary developments in the way the European Union manages its external relations since the Lisbon Treaty took effect last December.

Joao Vale de AlmeidaIn the coming days, the new Head of the EU Delegation, João Vale de Almeida, will take up his duties as the first EU Ambassador to the United States since the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. His arrival marks the end for the Washington Delegation of the important transition to the new "Lisbon" arrangements that began eight months ago. In Brussels the transition will be completed when the EU's new External Action Service is fully up and running by the end of this year under the authority of High Representative Catherine Ashton.

As I prepare my last weekly message, I look back over the last very eventful and active eight months; a lot has happened both in Europe and in this Delegation, but two issues were clearly in the forefront: the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty and the global economic crisis.
